Employee Training and Development: The Cornerstone of Organizational Success




Training and Development  are fundamental pillars of human resource management, designed to enhance employee capabilities and drive organizational success. While often used interchangeably, these two concepts serve distinct yet complementary purposes:

Training focuses on immediate skill acquisition for current job performance

Development emphasizes long-term growth to prepare employees for future roles.

Together, they create a workforce that is competent today and adaptable tomorrow.

Training and development empower individuals and teams to enhance their skills, knowledge, and capabilities. Whether it’s in the workplace, community, or personal life, investing in growth ensures adaptation to changing circumstances and increased efficiency. In the context of businesses, it fuels innovation, improves productivity, and boosts employee morale. 

 Employee Training

Training is the process in which learning opportunities are structured in a planned manner, so as to develop knowledge, Skills and attitude, necessary for effective performance of work for achieving organizational aims and objectives by the most cost effective means, available for the purpose. Thus, the basic theme of training function is to achieve "effective performance" by the employees towards attainment of organization goals. In an organization the manager's primary purpose is to ensure that the objective of the organizations achieved. process because of the dynamic nature. According to Armstrong(2000) training is the use of systematic and planned instruction activities to promote learning The training process maintains a short temporal frame as well as an action-based objective which delivers fundamental competencies for achieving current job performance objectives. The approach can be summarized in the phrase ‘learner based training’. 

 Employee Development

Kumar (2023) asserts that Development is a strategic investment in the future, equipping individuals with the expanded skillset they need to navigate and thrive in evolving landscapes. Development acts as a springboard, propelling you towards diverse career paths within the organization. Managerial skills broadly cover technical skills that are concerned with knowledge and proficiency employed in methods, procedures and processes, Human skills are concerned with Human Relations Skills. Effective Working and Collaborative Skills and Conceptual Skills and are Concerned with general management skills such as visioning, modeling, formulating Strategic planning etc. 

The six core skills that Managers require today:

  •  ▪ Flexibility
  •  ▪ Strategic Planning 
  • ▪ Team buildings

 The distinction between employee training and development appears shorter to longer-term objectives in organizational settings. Training and development represent different functions even though people utilize them as synonyms." Training prepares employees for today’s job; development prepares them for tomorrow’s challenges.”(Armstrong 2020).

Methods of Trainings and Development

Different training methods exist and divide into behavioral and cognitive training categories
methods. Trainers need to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each training method as they determine how the instruction will affect trainee retention.

The main purpose of cognitive methods consists of delivering theoretical information to trainees. This section of Cognitive Approach states both written and verbal methods which show methods to perform and show relationship  of understanding foster among trainees.

• Demonstrations
• Discussions
• Programmed Instruction (PI)
• Virtual Reality

The goal of behavioral methods is to deliver practical skills development for trainees. The various methods The trainee can engage in authentic behavior through the methods included under  Behavioral approach. These methods are best used for skill development.

  • The implementation of risk management training includes instruction on sexual harassment together with diversity education.
  •  Increase employee motivation-Organizations using training enhance their innovation capabilities in methods and products.
  •  Reduce employee turnover.-A company promotes its reputation through ethical training thus improving its public image.
  • Employee satisfaction together with moral standards improve throughout the workforce.

  • The organization can better accept new technologies and operational methods resulting financial achievements.
  • There is a direct correlation between the training plus development and organizational performance along with employee’s performance. 
Training and Development in Sri Lankan Organizations: Challenges, Trends, and Opportunities

The field of training and Development in Sri Lankan Organizations faces both practical obstacles and recent market trends together with new development opportunities.
The diverse Sri Lankan business sector consisting of Banking, apparel manufacturing tourism services information technology and agricultural industries needs qualified employees to compete successfully. Sri Lankan organizations struggle with three main challenges in their training and development activities especially from cultural, economic and structural alongside emerging opportunities.

Achievement Highlights

According to BOC (2024)The training and development policy adopted by the Bank of Ceylon ensure that all employees have access to equal opportunity for training and development. During the year, the Bank focused on developing the technical competencies of the staff with training and development programs across a wide spectrum with investment of Rs 374.9 millions paving the path to upskill the human resources of the Bank to cater to next level of banking.

The modern globalized society requires exceptional abilities from people. But humans are learning powerhouses. power within employees must be unleashed to fuel high performance and organizational success in changing businesses. Globalization demands a skilled workforce. Active investments into employee training and development techniques enable staff to discover their natural abilities.
The organization gains growth momentum through talent development while adapting its work practices. The convergence of a fundamental shift in employee development should occur because of globalization along with human capability development and accelerated work practice changes.
